Leading Australian salmon farming company Huon Aquaculture has announced a partnership with TasmaNet, a telecommunications and cloud services provider from Comms Group Limited, to implement new cutting-edge digital infrastructure and smart farming technology.

TasmaNet provides Huon with secure, high-performance connectivity and edge computing solutions for marine farms, hatcheries, and processing facilities. This enables a digital transformation to improve operational efficiency and animal welfare, reduce environmental impact, and improve productivity.

"With TasmaNet's advanced networking and IoT integration capabilities, we're now able to gather real-time environmental and fish welfare data, optimise feeding systems, and ultimately farm smarter and more sustainably," said Charles Von Der Hyde, CEO of Huon Aquaculture.

Additionally, Peter McGrath, CEO of Comms Group Limited and Executive Director of TasmaNet Pty Ltd, noted: "We're proud to help a world-class Tasmanian company like Huon Aqua set new benchmarks in sustainable food production. This partnership shows how local technology can help solve global challenges in ethical food production, the environment, and efficiency."

In July 2024, Huon Aquaculture invested AUS $110 million to expand its freshwater Atlantic salmon nursery facility in regional Tasmania by building a new Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS).

The project is expected to generate 150 jobs during construction and 8 permanent jobs once operational. Tasmania's Minister for Business, Industry and Resources, Eric Abetz, welcomed Huon Aquaculture's expansion plans for its Whale Point Facility at Port Huon.
