Scottish Sea Farms has announced an expansion of its collaboration with Tidal to use its autonomous feeding technology, following positive initial results from an ongoing project at a site in Orkney.
The technology will monitor fish behaviour and environmental conditions during feeding at sites across mainland Scotland, Orkney and Shetland. It will also adjust feed levels in real time based on the fish's observed appetite and response.
"The early experience has been very positive. The results are tracking in line with the expected performance model, which gives us increased confidence in the feeding decisions," indicated Duane Coetzer, Regional Production Manager at Scottish Sea Farms.
Also, Scottish Sea Farms highlighted its collaboration with BioMar to further explore the links between nutrition, fish behaviour and real-time feeding data.
Regarding this, Mikey Clarkson, Commercial Manager at BioMar UK, explained how this initiative will enable more targeted feeding strategies to improve fish performance while making more efficient use of feed.
"The collaboration gives us an opportunity to combine our respective expertise and learn from data generated in real farming conditions," he assured.
Finally, Anders Fossøy, General Manager of Tidal Norway concluded: "Technology alone does not transform the industry. It is collaboration and shared ownership of data and insights that create lasting change."
Back in 2025, the Scottish salmon producer announced the beginning of a new era of salmon farming in the Shetland Islands. Its flagship project is the Billy Baa farm, which represents an investment of £7.5 million, much of which has been allocated to Scottish suppliers.
