In a December which sees a succession of appointment news, it is GenoMar's turn to announce that Marina Delphino is the company's new Fish Health & Quality Solutions Group Manager. Effective December 1, 2023, the world's largest tilapia genetics company says this appointment underscores its commitment to advancing sustainable practices in tilapia aquaculture.

Outstanding job in LATAM to be replicated globally

In announcing Delphino's appointment, the company also said that one of her main tasks will be to develop and implement a unified vision and strategy for fish health, welfare, and quality and to transfer her success in LATAM to all its global operations.

"Marina has done an outstanding job setting up and maintaining a whole new standard in biosecurity and health management at our tilapia breeding center in LATAM," explained Alejandro Tola Alvarez, CEO of GenoMar Genetics Group. "We want to replicate similar standards across all our operations and lead the way in the biosecurity as much as we do in genetic performance. Her skills, experiences and uncompromising attitude will provide great leadership to our global teams to reach that goal."

"I’m excited to take up this new role at GenoMar," said for her part the new Fish Health & Quality Solutions Group Manager of GenoMar Genetics Group. "Building on my journey since 2020 as the Fish Health and Welfare Manager at the Brazilian Breeding Center, I will be dedicating my efforts to maintaining our top-tier biosecurity and health standards across all units."

"Furthermore, my focus will be on achieving crucial certifications and building systems for quality control of the final product. This move represents a major step forward in the company’s collective pursuit of sustainable, high-quality aquaculture," Marina Delphino added.

From studies to practice to improve tilapia health

As mentioned, the company highlighted Delphino's appointment and her task of establishing a strategic vision and global biosecurity standards as part of GenoMar's commitment to supplying robust and healthy starting material to its customers in the aquaculture sector. They are counting on her extensive experience and expertise to do so.

A veterinarian with expertise in veterinary epidemiology, holding a veterinary degree from the University of Brasília (UnB), Marina Delphino also holds a Master of Science degree in Animal Health. After completing her studies, she worked for 6 years at the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture in Brasilia, Brazil, where she was integral to the Aquatic Animal Health Coordination. Her responsibilities included establishing surveillance systems for aquatic animals and executing comprehensive import risk analyses for aquatic animals and their products.

Later, the new GenoMar's appointed Fish Health & Quality Solutions Group Manager completed her Ph.D. in Animal Health at UnB. Her doctoral research was a groundbreaking study into the disease risks associated with tilapia farming in tropical reservoirs, involving a comprehensive study, characterizing the dynamics of prevalent pathogens. The findings served as a foundation for developing effective control measures, influencing tilapia health, and enhancing surveillance programs.

Her career path then led her to a postdoctoral fellowship with the Canada Excellence Research Chair in Aquatic Epidemiology at the University of Prince Edward Island, Canada in 2018. Two years later, in 2020, she joined GenoMar Genetics Group as fish health manager at the company's state-of-the-art tilapia breeding and genetics center in Tocantins, Brazil. Now, the company hopes that everything she has already demonstrated for LATAM will be extended to the rest of the world.
