Raúl Prellezo, who is entering his fifth term, has been elected president.
The Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee for Fisheries (STECF), the advisory body to the European Commission on fisheries sustainability policies, has selected three professionals from the AZTI research team to be its members.
The professionals from the Basque technology center who are part of the Committee's renewed composition for the 2025–2028 period are Elsa Cuende, Leire Ibaibarriaga, and Raúl Prellezo. Additionally, Prellezo, who is entering his fifth term, has been elected president.
With this, AZTI becomes one of the entities with the greatest representation on the committee, reinforcing its relevance as a leading reference in the scientific advice that underpins the European Union's fisheries policies.
Regarding this achievement, AZTI's CEO, Rogelio Pozo, said: "This renewed trust from the European Commission is not only a recognition of the excellence and independence of our research team but also an opportunity to continue contributing with rigorous, applied science to the sustainability of fisheries and their ecosystems, as well as the communities that depend on the sea."
The STECF is responsible for providing solid scientific advice to the European Commission in the implementation of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) and advocating for sustainable aquaculture.
The 35 members of the committee have expertise in disciplines such as marine biology, fisheries technology, economics, governance, and data analysis.
"At AZTI, we would like to congratulate Elsa, Leire, and Raúl for this well-deserved recognition and for representing the values of our organization: scientific excellence, integrity, and commitment to a more sustainable future for the oceans and people," added Pozo.
