The Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC) announced today that Ingebjørg Hjortdahl will be its new envoy in South Korea. The appointment is a promotion for Hjortdahl, who currently holds the position of manager in this market, which is formally organized together with the NSC's office and operations in Japan.

In the same statement, the marketing communications organization also announced that, starting from the New Year, the South Korean office will obtain the status of an independent overseas office. Consequently, on par with the other offices in the NSC portfolio, it will also have its own seafood envoy.

According to the latest report from the Norwegian Seafood Council, also published today, exports to Asia have increased significantly, and as much as 20% of Norwegian salmon exports have gone to this continent in the last three months, up from 17% in the same period last year.

In the specific case of South Korea, there has been a marked increase in demand for Norwegian seafood products in recent years. Products such as salmon, mackerel, and king crab have become increasingly popular on Korean tables.

What's more, while last month we reported that mackerel had replaced salmon in September as the species with the highest growth in value, the NSC's October report indicates that South Korea was the largest destination market for Norwegian mackerel exports in October.

As a result of all this, there has also been an increased need for a local NSC presence in the country. Therefore, in order to continue the work already begun as an office reporting to Japan and to further increase the presence of Norwegian seafood products in South Korea, Ingebjørg Hjortdahl will take up her new position as envoy from January 1, 2026.

"Ingebjørg has done an excellent job so far, and I am confident that this is a very good solution for the Seafood Council's continued marketing efforts in South Korea, as well as for the strong cooperation we have within Team Norway," said NSC Director of Global Operations, Børge Grønbech, commenting on her appointment.
