Following the recent election win for Canada's Liberal Party, the Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, has this week confirmed that Joanne Thompson will continue in her role as Canada's Minister of Fisheries.
On Tuesday 13 May, 28 ministers and 10 secretaries of state were sworn in to their cabinet roles at Canada's Government House in Ottawa, with Carney unveiling significant changes to his team of ministers. Of these, 24 are newcomers to a cabinet position, with 13 having just been elected as members of parliament for the first time.
Announcing the new cabinet to the public, Carney described them as "a new team, purpose-built for this hinge moment in Canada's history."
Thompson, who was re-elected by her St Johns East constituency in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, is among the few to retain her ministerial position, which she took over from Diane Lebouthillier in March, amid much uncertainty within the seafood sector over trade and tariffs imposed by the US.
At the time, Thompson remarked she was taking on the role at "a critical time for trade and our economy."
"It's an honour to continue serving as Minister of Fisheries with Mark Carney and our incredible team," Thompson wrote in a LinkedIn post on 14 May.
"With lots of work ahead, I'm ready to get things done for Canadians and be a strong voice for Newfoundland and Labrador around the Cabinet table. It’s time to get to work and drive serious results and change for Canadians," she added.
