Subsecretaría de Pesca y Acuicultura (Subpesca), together with various public and private stakeholders, organized community activities to promote seafood consumption in Chile and highlight its nutritional, social, and economic benefits.

According to data provided by Subpesca, seafood consumption in Chile is around 13 kilograms per capita per year, below the 20 kilograms recommended by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

During the Juan de Dios Malebrán Fair in Puente Alto, the Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Osvaldo Urrutia, the mayor of Puente Alto, Matías Toledo, representatives of Corporación Propescado, artisanal fishing leaders, market vendors, and residents began discussions aimed at creating a public policy to promote seafood consumption.

"This is a challenge that not only involves nutrition, but also public health, food education, culture, and the economic development of thousands of families linked to fisheries and aquaculture," Urrutia said.

Likewise, the president of Corporación Propescado, Felipe Sandoval, added: "We are very proud to take part in this initiative, not only because consuming healthy and sustainable seafood products is beneficial for the future of our population, but also because it supports regional development, boosts local economies, and generates added value based on these products."

Finally, the fair concluded with a live cooking class led by chef and gastronomic ambassador Manuel Matamala, who, together with the mayor and the undersecretary, prepared simple and affordable seafood recipes.

In 2025, Subsecretaría de Pesca y Acuicultura confirmed its intention to implement proposals aimed at strengthening programs in educational institutions offering aquaculture-related specialties in order to build a more sustainable and diversified sector.
