Nigeria has confirmed its intention to boost the country’s fisheries sector through modernization and ecological protection, aiming to strengthen its role and status in the global seafood industry.
According to the news outlet Oriental News Nigeria, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, announced these plans during a recent U.S.-led validation and recertification exercise held in Lagos.
The Minister emphasized that harnessing Nigeria’s marine resources and rich marine biodiversity is also a top priority, as it serves as a key driver for sustainable development and improved livelihoods for millions of people across the country.
In this context, the government has launched the Renewed Hope Agenda, which seeks to promote sustainable economic growth while protecting the environment.
During the meeting, it was also confirmed that Nigerian fishing vessels are equipped with Turtle Excluder Devices (TEDs) that comply with international standards.
These devices ensure sustainable fishing practices and help prevent harm to sea turtles and other forms of marine life. This represents the first step toward gaining international recognition and acceptance for Nigerian fisheries.
Finally, Oriental News Nigeria highlighted the government's broader vision to complement these efforts with a robust blue economy that supports both communities and ecosystems.
