The Research Council of Norway was giving the news about the projects that will receive funding for the next period. Among them are two of the Akvaplan-niva innovative projects related to climate change.
"We are proud and happy that our young researchers are reaching fierce competition at the Research Council of Norway," explained Merete N. Kristiansen, Akvaplan-niva's CEO. Further, she added that this is an important step forward for the company. "It shows that Akvaplan-Niva has relevant experience and the ability to develop projects that can provide new knowledge, nationally and internationally."
The first of these two projects is entitled "Migratory Crossroads: Predicting the Dynamics of a Large Vertical Migration in a Changing Habitat." With a budget of NOK 8 million (EUR 718 thousand/USD 798 thousand), the project aims to study the cumulative effects of climate change, food availability, and predation on the vertical migration of a type of zooplankton Calanus finmarchicus. Kanchana Bandara leads the project, and collaborating partners such as NIVA, UiT Norway's Arctic University, NINA, Scripps Oceanographic Institute, University of California San Diego, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and University of Ruhuna, Sri Lanka, also participate in it.
Qin Zhou heads the second project titled "From Climate Drivers to Antarctic Ice Sheet Response: Enhancing the Accuracy of Sea Level Rise Predictions." This research has secured funding of NOK 9.99 million (EUR 887 thousand/USD 987 thousand) and aims to study the impact of climate change on rising sea levels. The Norwegian company will conduct the project in partnership with the Norwegian Polar Institute, NORCE, the University of Lapland, and the University of Tasmania.
