PROFISHBLUE: Strengthening the Blue Economy strategy and investment plan for Southern Africa.
FAO
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) will host a training session as part of the PROFISHBLUE project, which will consist of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Information Management System (FAIMS) implementation, a tool for fisheries data collection and analysis.
During the seminar, which will be held from December 8 to 23, national officers and enumerators in the areas of Kalemie, Moba, and Uvira, key locations along Lake Tanganyika, will learn how to use the FAIMS system.
The aim is to address poor connectivity, outdated infrastructure, and limited technical knowledge. Through customized digital tools and targeted training sessions, participants will learn how to collect and analyze fish stock assessment data.
The Tanzania Fisheries Research Institute (TAFIRI) will provide technical support in customizing the FAIMS forms for the DRC, procuring the necessary equipment, and conducting practical and theoretical sessions.
The PROFISHBLUE project aims to strengthen fisheries governance and support the sustainable development of the blue economy in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.
This initiative was presented in Gaborone, Botswana, on March 30, 2022, by the Secretariat of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the African Development Bank (AfDB), member states, and implementing partners.
Subsequently, in 2023, FAO and the SADC Secretariat implemented two components: a joint fisheries assessment in Lake Tanganyika and the Blue Economy strategy and investment plan for Lake Kariba.
The AfDB has funded nearly USD 1 million for the two components implemented by FAO and approximately USD 9 million for the entire program implemented in the 16 SADC countries.
A few days ago, the Board of Directors of the African entity approved a loan of $25.68 million to promote the development of fisheries and aquaculture in Côte d'Ivoire.
