Chilean salmon farmer Blumar is taking stock of the impact of a recent harmful algal bloom which killed over 3,000 tons of its fish, estimating a direct financial loss of US$ 8.5 million.
To date, approximately 3,800 metric tons (MT) of Atlantic and coho salmon have died as a result of the algae bloom, which was first reported on 2 January.
Netherlands-based company Veramaris has been granted first market authorization in Canada to include algal oil in feeds for salmonid species, after a three-year registration process.
