The former Minister of Fisheries, Oceans, and the Canadian Coast Guard, Diane Lebouthillier, confirmed a week ago the launch of Canada's first-ever conservation strategy to restore and rebuild wild Atlantic salmon populations and their habitats. This is one of her final announcements before Joanne Thompson took over her position.

The Department has been collaborating since 2021 with Canadians, stakeholders, partners, provincial governments, and Indigenous organizations to present the best possible solution. Furthermore, collaboration will continue for its future review and subsequent evolution.

The Government of Canada has already invested $6.1 million and plans to add another $1 million to the budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year, which will be allocated to the development of new projects focused on Atlantic salmon conservation and the objectives outlined in this strategy.

Specifically, this funding comes from the Aquatic Ecosystems Restoration Fund (AERF), the Indigenous Habitat Participation Program (IHPP), the Canada Nature Fund for Aquatic Species at Risk (CNFASAR), and the Habitat Stewardship Program (HSP).

Restoring Atlantic salmon is a "priority."

Wild Atlantic salmon in Atlantic Canada and Quebec is culturally and spiritually linked to Indigenous cultures and the health of ecosystems. It has been and remains a part of the livelihood of many Canadians for generations; for this reason, its decline is a pressing concern for both the community and the government.

"This Strategy will better position Canada to address the challenges affecting this species in our ecosystems. In collaboration with Indigenous communities, partners, and stakeholders, we can work to ensure a healthy and prosperous future for Atlantic salmon, noted Lebouthillier.

Additionally, Louie Porta, President and CEO, Atlantic Salmon Federation (ASF), indicated: "We recognize the funding today is an important down payment that will make a difference on the ground in 2025 and sets the stage for a much-needed substantial investment in years to come. ASF stands ready to contribute expertise and resources to help make this Strategy a success."
