The Minister of the Sea for the Regional Government of Galicia, Spain, Marta Villaverde, confirmed that this year, 240,000 euros will be allocated to support the activities of the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Mussel of Galicia for the development of its promotion and marketing.

During their meeting with the General Secretary of the Regulatory Council of this PDO, they both discussed the current situation of the sector and explored new avenues of collaboration to enhance the value of this product.

According to the Xunta de Galicia, in 2024, the mussel farming sector achieved a production of nearly 179 tons and a revenue of €128.6 million. Currently, there are more than 2,000 authorized nurseries, which represent 93% of Galicia's aquaculture production.

In addition, the region is home to 12 purification centers, 39 processing companies, and more than 120 authorized or in-process companies and brands that are licensed to market their products under this PDO (Protected Designation of Origin).

Furthermore, Villaverde reminded that in 2024, a total of 1,894 inspections were carried out at unloading points, 41 audits on rafts, and 112 audits on operators using the DOP Mussel from Galicia brand. This control action helps to strengthen its reputation among producers, marketers, and consumers.

In June, the Ministry of Economy and Industry of the Xunta confirmed that the Norwegian aquaculture company Seafood Legacy will begin the construction of its first salmon breeding plant in the region at the end of the year. This pioneering project in the area involves an investment of 80 million euros, of which the Xunta is expected to contribute around 30 million euros.
