Tilapia producer Brazilian Fish has announced the successful development of the first genetically edited tilapia, utilizing high-precision technological tools to achieve a genetic variation that naturally occurs in animals.

This has been made possible thanks to the collaboration with the Center for US Aquaculture Technologies (CAT) to perform genetic editing and achieve a successful reproduction result in just one year, while the usual process can take up to 20 years.

CAT's scientists and the research and development team at Brazilian Fish took two years to obtain the first animals, which are now securely segregated and ready for performance and genomic evaluations.

The production of fish with superior productive characteristics compared to traditional national aquaculture standards will reduce farming time and feed consumption during the growth and fattening stages.

This initiative will drive the technological transformation of fish farming in Brazil and offer safer and more nutritious food. Additionally, it will position tilapia as a more competitive species compared to other animal proteins in the global market.
