The government of Taiwan has confirmed that it is working together with the government of Belize to facilitate the import of Belizean white shrimp into the Taiwanese market and to strengthen their economic and trade exchanges.
For this reason, a delegation from Belize led by the Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Amalia Mai, met with Taiwan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lin Chia-lung.
"The government of Taiwan is actively making efforts to facilitate imports of Belizean white shrimp into the Taiwanese market and expressed hope that economic and trade exchanges would further deepen the bilateral partnership," Minister Lin detailed.
The delegation, which included Andy Sutherland, Director General of the Directorate General for Foreign Trade; Ishmael Quiroz, Executive Director of the Belize Trade and Investment Development Service (BELTRAIDE); and Samantha Banner, Director of the Belize Bureau of Standards, also took part in the second meeting of the Administrative Commission of the Economic Cooperation Agreement (ECA).
Representatives from various Taiwanese agencies also participated, including the International Trade Administration of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Agency of the Ministry of Agriculture, the Food and Drug Administration of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the Customs Administration of the Ministry of Finance, and the Importers and Exporters Association of Taipei.
Shrimp welfare in Asia
In 2024, HydroNeo, a Thailand-based company specialising in smart aquaculture solutions for shrimp farmers, partnered with animal welfare specialists FAI to give shrimp farmers new tools to monitor and improve welfare on their farms.
The collaboration will see FAI's established shrimp welfare assessment framework integrated into HydroNeo’s digital farm management app, which is already widely used by shrimp farmers throughout Asia.
The new tool offers a more holistic approach to farm management, focusing not just on environmental factors but also on shrimp health and well-being.
Additionally, HydroNeo will also promote FAI's free online Shrimp Welfare Course, available through the FAI Academy website, to further support farmers' education on welfare practices.
