BioMar announced that it has obtained ASC certification from the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) for its factory in Spain, which is key to its presence in southern Europe. From this plant, the aquaculture feed manufacturer produces high-performance feed for a wide variety of species, including sea bass, sea bream, trout, and other marine and freshwater fish.
"With this achievement, we are proud to support our customers in Spain and Portugal, markets that play a leading role in European aquaculture, and to strengthen our commitment to responsible aquaculture," said Luis García Romero, Managing Director of BioMar in the Western Mediterranean & Africa Region.
Located in Dueñas, a town in the province of Palencia, Castile and León, in north-central Spain and the Iberian Peninsula, in addition to Spain and Portugal, this factory also supplies markets in North Africa.
Thus, in its release announcing the achievement, BioMar emphasized that this certification marks a decisive step in its global strategy to offer ASC-compliant feed in key regions.
The aquafeed company also stated that the certification of the Dueñas plant reinforces its commitment to combining technical performance with responsible feeding practices. Specifically, ASC certification sets strict requirements in terms of environmental impact, social and labor rights, health and safety, and responsible sourcing of raw materials.
The entity responsible for certifying BioMar in Spain was DNV, an independent provider of assurance and risk management services and one of the world's leading certification bodies, which guarantees the performance of companies and their products, people, facilities, and supply chains in many sectors, including healthcare, aquaculture, food and beverages, and automotive.
"The ASC certification obtained by BioMar for its Dueñas facility is the result of a thorough independent audit process, in which compliance with strict requirements regarding environmental impact, labor rights, health and safety, and responsible sourcing of raw materials has been verified," explained Javier Soria, Food industry Director of DNV in Iberia.
"At DNV, we highlight that the documentary traceability and transparency in the internal control procedures implemented by BioMar ensure not only regulatory compliance, but also continuous improvement in risk management and the sustainability of the aquaculture supply chain," Soria added.
As BioMar highlights in its release, Spain and Portugal together account for a significant share of farmed seafood production in Europe, which is why their access to ASC-certified food is becoming increasingly important as global markets demand more traceable and transparent products.
This new certification ensures that producers in the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa can access ASC-compliant locally produced aquafeed, supporting their ability to meet growing market expectations for transparency, accountability, and alignment with certifications.
The achievement of BioMar's factory in Dueñas also comes at a key moment, as at the end of this month, ASC-certified farms will be required to source certified feed, making its products a reliable solution for maintaining certification and market access.
"Responsible production is no longer a niche requirement, it's becoming the industry standard," explained Luis García Romero. "This certification allows us to better serve our customers in the region with feeds that meet both regulatory demands and the expectations of retailers and consumers," the Managing Director of BioMar in the Western Mediterranean & Africa Region added.
This certification of its Spain facility adds to BioMar Group's growing list of ASC-certified aquaculture feed production sites worldwide, including operations in Denmark, Norway, the UK, Ecuador, Chile, and Costa Rica.
