Peru's Ministry of Production (Produce) announced the strengthening of conservation and management measures for the jumbo flying squid (Dosidicus gigas) fishery on the high seas to ensure its traceability in accordance with international standards.

Produce said that this reinforcement aims to ensure that Peruvian vessels registered with the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation (SPRFMO) comply with international provisions to guarantee the sustainability and legality of the resource.

It should be noted that during the Conxemar 2025 trade fair in Vigo, Spain, last November, international buyers demanded coordination in the Pacific jumbo flying squid fishery, calling for greater traceability, compliance, and environmental and social responsibility throughout the supply chain.

The newly approved regulation stipulates that Peruvian fishing vessels registered with SPRFMO must comply with the official registry of authorized vessels, the mandatory use of satellite monitoring systems, and the implementation of the onboard observer program, thereby strengthening control, traceability, and sustainability in this strategic fishery for the country, 90% of whose catches are exported.

The Peruvian Vice Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Jesús Barrientos, emphasized that these measures "reaffirm Peru's commitment to responsible fishing, based on scientific evidence and aligned with international standards, ensuring the conservation of jumbo flying squid resources and their sustainable use over time."

Likewise, Barrientos also specified that the resolution incorporates a mandatory format for recording catches and artisanal fishing effort for vessels up to 15 meters in length.

"This information will enable us to improve the monitoring of fishing activity on the high seas, strengthen decision-making, and ensure that our fishermen operate within a framework of legality and regulation," he noted.
