The Ministry of Production (Produce) in Peru has confirmed that the Peruvian economy grew by 3.33% in 2024, driven by the recovery of domestic demand, a 15.6% increase in exports, and the dynamism of primary sectors.
According to the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), the activities that contributed the most to GDP growth were fishing (+24.9%) and manufacturing (+3.9%).
In more detail, the agency noted that the fishing sector benefited from a higher catch of anchoveta for indirect human consumption (+134.1%), which increased from 1,980,820 tons in 2023 to 4,637,417 tons in 2024.
Additionally, Peru closed 2024 with 77.91% of the second season's anchovy quota landed. According to Produce, this figure reflects its commitment to conserving and managing the country's hydrobiological resources.
"This result is linked to the rise in industrial fishing activity (fishmeal and fish oil), supported by favorable oceanographic conditions. Additionally, the recovery of domestic demand, with growth close to 3.5%, and the increase in industrial exports (+11.3%) also played a role," added PRODUCE Minister Sergio González Guerrero.
In January, IFFO - The Marine Ingredients Organisation informed in January that fishmeal production increased by nearly 16% compared to the same period in 2023. The organization attributes this growth to the accumulated supply from Peru.
