The Global Tuna Alliance (GTA) has launched a campaign with the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) to strengthen sustainable tuna fishing practices and more than 40% of the French distribution market have joined this initiative.
The GTA has created a 'Complementary Module' specifically designed for French distribution partners. Through this, the Alliance will provide comprehensive surveys on canned tuna sourcing, down to vessel-level details.
Therefore, business agents will identify and mitigate potential risks in their supply chains and make more efficient and sustainable decisions. Among the participants are Les Mousquetaires, Système U, Lidl, and Casino. In addition, METRO will join the 'Complementary Module' for its French stores.
Regarding the new module, Eloïse Fagot, Partnerships and Operations Manager for the GTA, commented: "As a French citizen, I am truly proud to see such enthusiasm and commitment from our leading retailers to embrace sustainability in the tuna supply chain through the Complementary Module."
The GTA campaign is particularly dedicated to Indian Ocean tuna as its stocks are unprotected and vulnerable to overfishing. The Alliance seeks to discuss this with the IOTC and will meet this month, as Daniel Suddaby, Executive Director of the GTA, confirmed.
"For France, with its department of La Réunion in the Indian Ocean, it is reassuring to see such significant support as we embark on our campaign for the IOTC, ensuring that our collective efforts will have meaningful and lasting effects on tuna conservation. We hope that the increasingly powerful voice of the market will be heard at the upcoming IOTC meeting," Suddaby added.
The latest International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF) Status of the Stocks report published in April, alerted that a10% of global tuna catch needs more effective control.
