The Norwegian company DNV, acting as an independent certification body for the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), has awarded the new Feed Standard certificate to Skretting for its commitment to sustainability, innovation, and human rights during the Seafood Expo Global in Barcelona.
This standard evaluates producers based on their compliance with requirements such as labor and social rights, health and safety, environmental management, and the responsible sourcing of raw materials. From October 31 this year, ASC-certified farms will need to use ASC-certified feed to maintain this certification.
"The ASC Feed Standard provides a robust methodology to better identify and mitigate legal, environmental, and social risks associated with the raw materials we use. Importantly, the standard addresses both environmental and social impacts and offers a strong framework for upholding human rights", explained Sergio Alanis, Managing Director Business Unit Southern Europe at Skretting.
Additionally, Global Market and Industries Director at DNV, Stefano Crea, indicated: "It promotes transparency, traceability, and continuous improvement in the aquaculture industry, ultimately contributing to more sustainable and ethical seafood production."
ASC announced in March that Skretting Japan's Imari Plant was the first feed mill in the country to achieve the Feed Standard certification. Skretting's plant is located in Saga Prefecture, Kyushu, the Imari Plant, and produces feed for species such as freshwater trout, salmon, bass, bream, meager, seriola, cobia, and tropical marine finfish.
Moreover, a few days later, Skretting Spain turned into Europe's first ASC-certified feed factory. This distinction applauded the feed company's efforts to recognize and mitigate the environmental and social risks facing aquaculture, while advancing towards sustainability.
"Through our purpose of ‘Feeding the Future,’ we are dedicated to producing feeds that promote food security in a sustainable way. Skretting is focused on reducing our environmental footprint while increasing our positive social impact. Over time, our commitment to innovation and sustainability has set new benchmarks for aquaculture feed production," concluded Alanis.
