Ace Aquatec will present its innovative A-HSU® skid-mounted in-water electric trout stunner to the North American market at the 2025 Ontario Aquaculture conference at Fleming College in Lindsay, Canada, on February 27th.

The A-HSU® system complies with the strict regulations set by the National Farm Animal Care Council (NFACC) under the 'Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Farmed Salmonids' and is approved by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Agribusiness (OMAFA).

"Showcasing this system at the Ontario Aquaculture conference is the perfect opportunity to demonstrate how we can help producers achieve high-quality fish while adhering to strict welfare requirements," expressed the Head of Sales at Ace Aquatec, Ben Perry.

Ace Aquatec's tool has already been successfully implemented in both land-based and vessel-based systems across multiple regions. For example, the Scottish company and FRD Japan created a bespoke system that supports the safe and seamless transfer of fish between the grow-out and processing facilities.

How it works

The fish are introduced into a stun tube, pumped and recirculated with water, where they are exposed to an electric field that renders them insensible, reducing stress and crowding.

The A-HSU® stunner can be used for a wide range of freshwater production species. Additionally, it can be used in various harvesting environments, including RAS system, thanks to its adaptable design.

This portability allows it to be mounted on a skid, making it usable across different terrains, whether by a lake or pond. It is capable of processing up to 15 tons of trout per hour.

"Ace Aquatec's in-water electric stunning system provided us with a reliable, efficient and welfare friendly solution that ensures fish are stunned instantly and humanely, reducing stress and improving overall product quality. Adapting the system to be mounted on a skid base is a perfect solution to meeting the needs of farmers across Canada and elsewhere," said Arlen Taylor, Director of Operations at Cedar Crest, one of the first trout farmers in Canada to adopt the humane stunning system.
