This product represents 93% of Galicia's aquaculture production.
The regional government of Galicia in Spain, Xunta de Galicia, in its efforts to digitalize the sector, has implemented a new software application to help regulate the collection of mussel seed from natural banks.
Specifically, the modification of the Order of October 26, 2000, requires that, within fifteen days after the end of each collection period, a detailed report of the quantities extracted must be submitted, including the location and date of collection. This software will help gatherers communicate the required information to the administration instantly, in line with this order.
As a result, the status of the resource can be more accurately assessed, enabling more sustainable exploitation, optimizing the availability of mussel seed as the extraction campaign progresses, and providing information on the optimal periods and areas for collection.
Additionally, this tool will allow for the identification of all authorized agents involved in the collection of mussel seed: concessionaires of nurseries or their employees, as well as gatherers from cooperatives or associations of shellfish gatherers, following the agreements signed for this purpose.
Finally, the Xunta ensures that the legal security of the aquaculture facility holder will be guaranteed, as the digital proof will back the mussel batches during their transport by land or sea to the destination nursery.
Just a few days ago, the Xunta confirmed that this year, 240,000 euros will be allocated to support the activities of the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Mussel of Galicia for the development of its promotion and marketing.
