Aquaculture biotechnology firm WellFish Tech has announced the appointment of Erik Tveteraas as Group Finance Director, as the company is strengthening its commercial position and preparing for international expansion.

As he explained in an exclusive interview with WeAreAquaculture, Tveteraas began his career at a Scottish corporate finance firm specialising in agriculture after earning a Master's degree in International Business and Emerging Markets from the University of Edinburgh. During his seven years there, he gained valuable experience in the aquaculture sector through a range of industry-related projects.

Later, he managed investments in aquaculture technologies, fish health, precision farming, and alternative proteins at NuFrontiers, the corporate venture capital arm of Nutreco, Skretting's parent company. Most recently, he served as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Norwegian Mycelium (NoMy), a fermentation technology company developing sustainable feed and food ingredients.

"He has seen what separates companies that scale successfully from those that do not. That perspective is exactly what we need at this stage of WellFish Tech's development. Having someone of Erik's calibre help us capitalise on that position is a significant step forward for the company. We are very pleased to have him join the team," expressed WellFish Tech CEO Charlie Granfelt.

For his part, Tveteraas highlighted how WellFish Tech's systems are well positioned at a time when producers are increasingly focused on safeguarding fish health and reducing mortality rates.

"The value proposition of near-instant biological intelligence, seamlessly integrated into customers’ farming operations, together with a subscription-based recurring revenue model and the physical component of the service — proprietary blood sampling and analytics — creates a barrier to entry that purely software- or AI-based competitors cannot replicate. That combination is rare, and it is what brought me here," he assured.

Just a few days ago, WellFish Tech received approval from the Norwegian Food Safety Authority, Mattilsynet, for the use of non-lethal blood sampling in Atlantic salmon at commercial aquaculture sites in Norway.

This is the first time a non-lethal blood sampling method has met animal welfare documentation requirements in Norway. It also removes a ban on this method that had been in place for several years.
