The Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC) announced the resignation of its Manager of Global Operations, Gunvar Wie, who, on August 1, will begin as Marketing Director at Seaborn, a major distributor of Norwegian salmon and fjord trout founded and owned by several Norwegian fish farming companies located along Norway's coast.
In addition to his position as Manager of Global Operations at the Seafood Council, Wie also currently has overall responsibility for the conventional sector. During his nearly 10 years at NSC, he has held positions both in Norway and abroad, where he has served as seafood envoy to Japan and South Korea, and later to Italy, a position in which he was replaced by Tom-Jørgen Gangsø in 2023.
Precisely after returning from his role as NSC seafood envoy to Italy, Wie has been residing in Bergen and commuting from there to the Norwegian Seafood Council's head office in Tromsø. As an employee of Seaborn, Bergen will now also be his permanent workplace.
"It's a pity to lose a very skilled colleague," said NSC Director of Global Operations, Børge Grønbech, commenting on Wie's resignation. "Through various roles at the Seafood Council, Gunvar has helped strengthen the position of Norwegian seafood in many markets. The entire industry has benefited from that, especially during the seven years he served as seafood envoy to Japan, South Korea, and Italy."
In its release announcing Wie's leaving, the Norwegian Seafood Council highlighted that, at the NSC, Gunvar Wie has worked with pelagic species, shellfish, salmon, and, in recent years, within the conventional sector.
"His new role at Seaborn is not related to conventional products, which have been Wie's main priority over the past two years. However, we will still assess what measures may be necessary from a competition standpoint," Børge Grønbech explained, though.
This is the second resignation at the NSC in just over a month. At the end of April, we learned that the NSC's envoy to Portugal, Trond Rismo, had resigned. As Gunvar Wie, Rismo will also leave the position on August 1, having accepted a new job in another part of the seafood industry, unrelated to conventional products.
The NSC release also included statements from Seaborn's Commercial Director, Frank Yri, who is now looking forward to Gunvar Wie joining the team.
"It will help Seaborn continue its growth and achieve our goals. Seaborn's success is about strong relationships with farmers, close ties to markets, and the expertise within the organization—and here, the Norwegian Seafood Council supports the journey," Frank Yri stated.
"I'm now going from working for the industry to working within the industry," Gunvar Wie said, for his part. "I'm really looking forward to becoming part of the inspiring team at Seaborn, and especially to getting to know the owners, who are local family-owned aquaculture companies along the coast. I must admit, that part makes me especially motivated," he concluded.
