The Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) in Peru, through the National Fisheries Development Fund (FONDEPES), granted over S/ 29 million ($7.5 million) in credits to artisanal fishermen and aquaculture farmers across the country in 2024.
The extraordinary credit programs were aimed at artisanal fishermen and aquaculture farmers affected by adverse weather conditions and represent a 64% increase compared to what was granted in 2023.
"With the over S/ 29 million granted, we are promoting the modernization and sustainability of the sector, allowing beneficiaries to access better tools and technology to make their activities more competitive," said the Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Jesús Barrientos.
Specifically, 1,019 credits were granted nationwide. Of these, 573 were directed to artisanal fishing and 446 to aquaculture. In the allocations for artisanal fishermen, the regions of Piura, Ica, and Arequipa stood out, while the aquaculture credits were led by Puno, San Martín, and Ayacucho.
FONDEPES' financial support includes the financing of the acquisition of goods and/or services in the categories AREL (Aquaculture of Limited Resources) and AMYPE (Aquaculture for Micro and Small Businesses).
These goods can include motors, nets, navigation and communication equipment, boat repairs, and warehouse insulation for artisanal fishing.
In the case of aquaculture, it covers the purchase of balanced feed, materials and equipment, infrastructure expansion, incubation rooms, and the acquisition of eggs or fry.
"These supervised credits not only improve their productive capacities but also provide greater stability in the face of external factors such as adverse weather conditions," detailed Deputy Minister Barrientos.
