The Presidency of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) has appointed Rosa Figueroa as the new director of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO), which focuses on marine sciences studies, oceanography, and marine ecosystems protection and management.
Previously, Figueroa was the director of the Vigo Oceanographic Center as a microalgae biology, physiology, and ecotoxicology researcher. Additionally, she was an associate professor at Lund University (Sweden) for four years.
The new director takes on the role "with great respect for all the work that has been done previously and with the will and enthusiasm to continue advancing." She succeeds María del Carmen García, who has held the position since 2023.
The Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities (MICIU) confirmed the allocation of more than €5.2 million to build a new cultivation building at IEO's Vigo Oceanographic Center.
Currently, the IEO operates nine oceanographic centers. The purpose of these centers is to promote marine science research and expand scientific knowledge of the oceans.
The first step will be to demolish the current cultivation building to replace it with another more modern and functional one. The new energy-efficient design will occupy a total area of approximately 2,205 m².
