Icelandic land-based aquaculture company LAXEY has announced today that its post-smolt facility is up and running. According to the release, it became operational after the first fish were transferred from its smolt station on 27 May. By 5 June, the transfer of the entire batch had been successfully completed.

"This marks another important milestone in the development of LAXEY and our journey towards building a state-of-the-art land-based salmon farming operation in Vestmannaeyjar," the company said in the brief statement issued to announce the news.

The company highlighted that the post-smolt facility is an important addition to its grow-out operations because, by increasing the volume available for larger fish at an earlier stage of the production cycle, the facility improves operational flexibility, optimizes capacity use, and promotes a more efficient production flow throughout the farm.

Built in just 10 months, the facility, which consists of eight tanks, each with a volume of 1,050 m³, providing a total volume of 8,400 m³ dedicated to post-smolt production, is fully operational and running as planned.

"Reaching this milestone is a testament to what can be achieved through strong teamwork, expertise and commitment," LAXEY concluded its statement.

Previously, the Icelandic land-based aquaculture company had extended its thanks to everyone who had participated in the project. "A remarkable achievement made possible by the dedication and hard work of our employees, contractors, suppliers and partners," the company said.

These include well-known companies such as the Norwegian AKVA group—which in July of last year announced that it had landed a major contract for LAXEY's post-smolt module in Iceland and, more recently, in April 2026, announced a new EUR 28 million contract—, or the Canadian ReelData, with which it signed a multi-year commercial agreement for the use of its smart camera system, ReelWeight.

The Icelandic land-based salmon farmer, who in July 2025 secured an additional EUR 28 million in equity financing—part of which was earmarked for the construction of a large smolt facility in Viðlagafjara, Vestmannaeyjar—completed its first salmon harvest in November 2025.
