The Global Seafood Alliance (GSA) has announced the addition of a new member to its Board of Directors. The role will be filled by Moritz Konz, who has been the Sustainability Manager Fish and Seafood at the ALDI SOUTH Group since January 2022, but has been working in the seafood sector for a decade.
According to the GSA note, in his current position, Konz oversees the responsible sourcing of fresh, frozen, refrigerated, and canned fish and seafood in eleven ALDI markets. His role encompasses certification, supply chain management, human rights, and sustainability, ensuring that complex global supply chains meet high standards.
The Global Seafood Alliance has also highlighted that, under his leadership, the ALDI SOUTH Group has made progress in its commitments to responsible sourcing and transparency, helping consumers around the world to access certified seafood products.
Moreover, in its announcement, the international trade association highlighted that this new addition brings a wealth of experience in responsible seafood sourcing and supply chain management to the organization, which will further strengthen GSA's mission to promote responsible practices in the global fishing industry.
"Moritz's perspective as a retailer and his depth of knowledge of corporate responsibility in the seafood sector will be invaluable to GSA. His dedication to advancing responsible practices aligns perfectly with our mission," said GSA CEO Mike Kocsis.
"I am pleased to join the GSA Board of Directors and contribute to our shared mission of advancing responsible seafood sourcing worldwide," Moritz Konz stated for his part. "I look forward to sharing my expertise, as well as the perspective of the global retail industry, to support GSA's important mission."
By joining the GSA Board of Directors, the Sustainability Manager Fish and Seafood at ALDI SOUTH Group joins a group of fishing industry leaders representing stakeholders across the value chain. The last person to join before him was Citlali Gómez Lepe, President of COMEPESCA, the Mexican Council for the Promotion of Fishing and Aquaculture Products, whose appointment was announced in May this year.
As the Global Seafood Alliance notes in its statement on Konz's appointment, together, its Board members provide oversight and strategic guidance as the association works to promote responsible practices in the fishing industry through its certification programs and education and advocacy initiatives.
In that effort, at the end of last year, the GSA released its updated standard for seafood processing and launched its new traceability platform, 'Prism', in collaboration with Wholechain. More recently, earlier this month, it also published an updated version of its Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) Feed Mill Standard, introducing new standards aimed at improving traceability and responsible sourcing in the production of feed for aquaculture.
The ALDI SOUTH Group, for its part, has simplicity, consistency, and responsibility as its core values in order to offer high-quality products at the best price. Its mission, the company claims, is to make sustainable and responsibly sourced food affordable for everyone.
Operating in eleven countries on four continents, the food retail company has more than 7,300 stores in the U.S., the UK, Switzerland, Slovenia, Italy, Ireland, Hungary, Germany, China, Austria - where Moritz Konz is based -, and Australia.
Indeed, Aldi Australia was recognized as an Aquaculture Champion for the second consecutive year, in addition to winning the ASC Best Responsible Retailer and Best Responsible Seafood Retailer awards at the 2025 ASC MSC Sustainable Seafood Awards, held in March.
Moritz Konz's joining the GSA Board is not the only involvement of the ALDI SOUTH Group in a Board of Directors. Just two months ago, its Senior Director of International Sustainability, Sally Roach, joined the Certified Seafood International (CSI), the organization that offers eco-certification programs for seafood products, also as a Board member. Commenting on her appointment, Roach highlighted the importance of third-party certification as a tool for seafood buyers.
